Invitation to EUCAPA 2016

EUCAPA will be a 3 day conference in a beautiful city of Olomouc with all contributions in a plenary schedule as to allow participants to attend as much presentations as possible. We are putting great emphasis on ‘research’ and presentation of excellent quality work. Our aim is also to attract colleagues that are not attending (anymore) APA conferences and to start specific trajectory for youngsters to attract them to APA work in Europe. All the lectures, workshops and other parts of conference will be held in NH Collection Olomouc Congress (http://www.nh-olomouc.cz/).
History and Perspectives of EUCAPA
The European Congress of Adapted Physical Activity (EUCAPA) has been in existence since 1986. It was organized for the first time by Jean-Claude DePotter, at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (B), in order to establish a European branch of the international federation (IFAPA). DePotter then became president of IFAPA (1987-1991) and was a very active collaborator for the development of the respective study programs (EMDAPA and DEUAPA). The chair persons of the European Association of Research into Adapted Physical Activity (EARAPA) in the following years have been: Dr. Gudrun Doll-Tepper, Free University Berlin, Germany (1987-1993), Dr. Herman Van Coppenolle, K.U. Leuven, Belgium (1993-2002), Dr. Maria Dinold, University of Vienna, Austria (2002-2006), and since 2006 Dr. Jean-Claude DePotter Since 2004 the association was renamed to the European Federation of Adapted Physical Activity - EUFAPA).
The European conferences (EUCAPA) took place twice in Leuven (B) - 1993 and 1995 - then in Thessaloniki (GR) - 1998, Vienna (together with 13th ISAPA) - 2001, Amiens (F) - 2002, Dortmund (GER) - 2004), Olomouc (CZ) - 2006, Torino (ITA) – 2008, Jyväskylä (FIN) - 2010, Killarney (IRL) - 2012, Madrid (SPA) - 2014.
It can be stated that the scientific exchange within these European meetings became more intensive due to smaller participant's rate and more time for discussions. On the other hand the different national partners have acknowledged barriers of understanding because of the many different languages within Europe. The regional organisers try to form connections with practitioners in the field by providing special offers for them - such as workshops for planning and evaluating APA programmes, development of single case studies, or similar.

WELCOME TO PALACKÝ UNIVERSITY Olomouc

The organizer of the conference is the Faculty of Physical Culture, Palacký University Olomouc. This instituion was established in 1991 and is one of the most important institutions with this orientation in the Czech Republic. It plays a significant role in the education of P.E. teachers, scientific researchers, and other specialists in the area of physical culture. About 1800 students are presently studying at the faculty. All the cornerstones developed at the Faculty of Physical Culture, i.e. P. E. teaching, adapted physical education, leisure studies, and physiotherapy in the undergraduate and kinanthropology in the postgraduate study program, serve to improve our understanding of the impact of movement activities on health and lifestyle.

The Faculty of Physical Culture is one of the eight faculties of which Palacký University consists. The University evolved from its origin as a Jesuit seminary in 1573 and is the second oldest university in the Czech Republic. Until its closing in 1860 the University participated in the advancement of the education of students from different countries. The University in Olomouc celebrates 60 years of its existence as Palacký University was re-established in 1946. At present almost 15,000 students are studying at the university and about 1300 teachers, scientific researchers and other employees work there.

Three years, three excellent awards by the world’s prestigious guidebook. Lonely Planet made a list of the most beautiful, yet lesser known tourist destinations. It wasn’t the hot springs of Iceland, Gibraltar Rocks, Odysseus' Ithaca or Luxemburg that ranked in first place but the historical center of Olomouc! How to get there we suggest the following website adress - http://tourism.olomouc.cz/basic-information/how-to-get-to-us/en.

The mini guidebook, Secret Europe, presents tourists with fifty cities from different parts of Europe. The largest, world-renowned guidebook publisher attracts tourists to Olomouc by saying that “in terms of tourism Olomouc can be equated to an authentic restaurant which is your own, small, personal secret. The Main Square is amongst the most enchanting in the country. It is surrounded by historical buildings. It is adorned by the Holy Trinity Column listed as the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Magnificent churches, many of which host an exciting history, are scattered in the streets of the historical center. Explore the foundations of the ancient Olomouc castle in the Archdiocese Museum which is a must-see and then set out to one of the many pubs or mini-breweries”. In 2012, the publisher also awarded Olomouc by ranking it in the top ten most beautiful hidden treasures in Europe. One year later it was once again on the list of the recommended destinations in Moravia. “It’s beautiful as well as surprising for us. Lonely Planet is to tourist guidebooks what Michelin is to gastronomy. I perceive it as a win in the tourist Olympics,” responded Olomouc mayor, Martin Major, when he first heard of the award. “I am very pleased that the professional editor-in-chief of this publication truly appreciates the beauty of our city, its picturesque atmosphere and its uniqueness.

Apart from other things, Olomouc captivated them by the fact that it offers the same architectural treasures as Prague but without the crowds of tourists. It is definitely Olomouc’s advantage in comparison with our capital. However, despite repeated acclaim from the renowned guidebook, it may only be temporary”, mentioned the mayor, Major, with a smile. The deputy mayor, Jan Holpuch added, “I believe that this is an opportunity to introduce our beautiful city to many other tourists.” “I think that being awarded as a hidden treasure or undiscovered city will give Olomouc an even stronger stamp of attractiveness and will evoke more interest in potential visitors.”

Olomouc has been trying to advertise its beauty in a high-quality and systematic way. In the past years, this attempt has proved effective. Statistically as well as simply looking into the streets of the city center confirms that the number of tourists to Olomouc has truly increased. Olomouc is on the list of destinations offered by travel agencies as for example, one-day trips from Prague or as a part of the Vienna – Krakow route. “Greater advertising in cooperation with the agency CzechTourism certainly helped.

This agency gives Olomouc more space than before”, says Karin Vykydalová, head of the tourism department. “Acclaim from Lonely Planet obviously helps. Ideally, a visitor comes here based on the recommendation, is satisfied here and then recommends Olomouc to his friends back home”, adds Dušan Gavenda of the same department. Lonely Planet Secret Europe can be downloaded for free at: www.lonelyplanet.com/secret-europe.
